BACKYARD TREASURES

European Hedgehog

European Hedgehog

The European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is easily recognized by its spines, which are hollow hairs made stiff with keratin. The spines are not poisonous or barbed and, unlike the quills of a porcupine, cannot easily be removed from the animal. A hedgehog is any of the small spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the order Erinaceomorpha. There are 16 species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand.
The Backyard series is a personal project started by Miami based photographer Aaron Ansarov which explores the beauty in color and design of animals found in backyards around the world.
