On a nearby memorial atop Mount Suribachi, military members pay homage to the Marines and Navy Corpsmen lost on the island of Iwo Jima by pinning their insignias to this board.
The Japanese government is hosting members of Carrier Air Wing Five for two weeks of training on the island of Iwo Jima. According to Lieutenant Commander Marc Moore, NAF Atsugi Iwo Jima det coordinator, more than 800 Sailors will have come through this historic island once this training evolution is completed. According to Moore, each pilot from the air wing must get qualified on carrier landings before embarking on USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and Iwo Jima offers just that opportunity to accomplish this training in a timely manner.
